The Work of Making Art

I consider my cameras and scanner, my computer, and the programs I use all part of the “artist’s palette”. For me, photography has always been more than simply exposing a sensor or an emulsion to light then manipulating a process to produce an image that is a faithful representation of the scene that was being recorded. While I naturally strive to produce images that are a faithful representation, I consider the images I record as base or source photos that are for me a place to start. Most of these source photos are now shot in HDR with five to nine exposures for each image.

There is a common notion that the artist decides when a piece is finished. However, for me, it is the opposite, I believe every piece of art has a life force of its own and if the artist taps into this energy and understands it, the piece will suggest to the artist what it needs to be complete. I often create my (abstract & multiple image) art in short steps, adding a little bit at a time then waiting for the work to suggest what it needs next. Sometimes the work moves along quickly and other times it’s a slow process, it depends on how eager the piece is to be completed.

My art is usually a reaction to what I see, whether it is the location I’m in or the images I have recorded. I will often put myself in situations or seek out locations I think will inspire and suggest interesting images. At times, I react to my own photographs, using multiple images exclusively from my own source photos to create new images. The abstract montages I create each use images from a common location, while the surrealist images follow a theme.

On digital Photography and HDR Abstracts:

Just as the Kodak brownie camera was a quantum leap for advancing the technological process known as photography thus allowing everyone to indulge in a creative endeavor, the conversion to digital images allows everyone to become that much more involved in the process. I have always been fascinated by abstract art and images that are based on the real world but suggest more than “just what meets the eye”. Photography as a process and as a means of expression, fuels my fascination. It allows me an unlimited supply of real world images on which to base my abstract art. The base images I use in my abstract work are usually shot in HDR and are always my own images. The HDR abstracts are concept based, blending images through Photoshop and HDR programs.
